Song of the Day - January 31, 2006

Here's another over achieving Seattle band, Tennis Pro, which combines the harmony of the Beach Boys and the wry wit of Weezer. The world needs more bands like Tennis Pro with their unique style of power pop. On their 2004 debut album Happy Is the New Sad the standout track is "Bellingham." It starts out with what I believe is a borrowed riff from another master of power pop, Elvis Costello, and continues with the one of the best choruses I have heard in quite awhile, "Got nothing but love for Bellingham." The harmony they produce is absolutely addictive. By the way, Bellingham is the home of Western Washington University located on the scenic coast near the border of Washington and Canada. Gerald Wilson Orchestra - In My Time

Back when I was composing my best of 2005 jazz list, I don't believe Gerald Wilson's In My Time was available on Rhapsody. Well, I am not sure what I would have eliminated because this is one fine example of the modern big band sound. Gerald Wilson is well into his eighties and cut his teeth in the Jimmie Lunceford Band in the 40's. When first listening to the album I was immediately taken by the track "Lomelin" with its Spanish influenced melodies and stratospheric trumpet solos, that I thought could only be the work of Jon Faddis. I did a little research and sure enough Mr. Faddis was hitting the high notes on this record. Gerald Wilson's orchestra is overflowing with talent, the trumpet section is rounded out by Eddie Henderson, Frank Green, Jeremy Pelt, Jimmy Owens, Sean Jones,and Mike Rodriguez. The great Rene Rosnee is on piano, Lewis Nash drums, Russell Malone on guitar, Peter Washington bass, Luis Bonilla, Benny Powell, Douglas Purviance, Dennis Wilson all are on trombone, Steve Wilson and Ron Blake are in the sax section. I am sure I missed a few, but they are all great musicians. The featured work on this album is the three part suite entitled "The Diminished Suite," which is a study and variation in diminished chords. The arranging and composing talents of Gerald Wilson have not faded, but only gotten better with age. The saxophones are awesome on the opening cut "Sax Chase." Russell Malone contributes excellent guitar work on multiple passages including "A.E.N." where Rene Rosnee tickles the ivories to great satisfaction. Song of the Day - January 30, 2006

Mon Frere's "Up Circle" starts out with some jazz like cymbals and tripped out keyboards, but this is not a mellow song. Nouela Johnston's vocals soon kick in, the beat increases, and the intensity level rises making this one great song. Mon Frere were last year's winners of Paul Allen's Experience Music Project, a battle of the bands in which all the contestants had to be under 21. This group of young talent won some free studio time which they obviously put to good work. Click here to listen.

Song of the Day - January 27, 2006

It must be the long winters in Minneapolis because the city has a history of producing great punk rock bands such as The Replacements, Husker Du, and the lesser known Suburbs. History does have a habit of repeating itself, and The Stnnng's Dignified Sissy is no exception. This is one of the best punk albums I have heard in a long time. The Stnnng combine the energy of The Dead Kennedys, the spastic rhythms of The Fall, and the rawness of Iggy Pop. "Self-Harm Is the New Rock and Roll" showcases the intensity of The Stnnng, with Jello Biafra style ranting and Fall influenced rhythms. Click here to listen.

Creazioni Artistiche Musicali

C.A.M. Records is an Italian record label that made their name in film soundtracks. In 2000 they launched C.A.M Jazz, which is a treasure trove of jazz treats. C.A.M. Jazz specializes in soundtracks, original compositions, and vintage recordings by jazz legends. The stable of artists that are in their catalogue is quite impressive: John Abercombrie, Art Farmer, Jim Hall, Phil Woods, Charlie Haden, Joe Lovano, Martial Solal, and others. Many of these artists are not listed below as they are sideman on many recordings. The very heart of their catologue is comprised of Italian jazz artists who are not well known in the US, but their talent is exceptional. This includes artists like the awesome trumpet and flugelhorn player Enrico Rava, drummer Roberto Gatto, bassist Giovanni Tommaso, and pianists Enrico Pieranunzi and Salvatore Bonafede. Song of the Day - January 26, 2006

The Boondogs have taken the lyrics from the R.E.M. tune, "It's the end of the world as we know it," and put their Southern alt country, slightly psychedelic, pop sensibilities to work to craft a song uniquely their own. "My Little Secret" features the vocals and keyboards of Indy Grotto, while her husband, Jason Weinheimer, plays guitar. The band is rounded out by Charles Wyrick on electric guitar, Chris Michaels on bass, and Isaac Alexander on drums. The Boondogs are an export of Little Rock, Arkansas. Click here to listen.

Song of the Day - January 25, 2006

I think I have been missing the boat, the boat to Australia that is. Starky is a Sydney four piece that just plain rocks. They remind me of The Clash with a dash of The Jam. I just love those bands, and I love Starky. The track "Cool It" is from their debut album Mirror, Signal, Manoeuvre and it has that punk attitude that the early Clash excelled at. The song has some catchy riffs, that are overlaid with some brief but rockin guitar solos. This is my kind of roots music. Click here to listen.

Song of the Day - January 24, 2006

I often speak of music that is an acquired taste, well, Afrirampo may even challenge those that have developed their musical palate. Do not pass up the opportunity to listen to Afrirampo because they are one of the most unique musical experiences available today. Afrirampo, which means "naked rock" consists of two sisters from Osaka; Oni is on guitar and Pikachu plays drum. To the uninitiated Afrirampo can be explained as a Japanese hybrid of the musical pairing of Captain Beefheart and The Stooges. Their music is raw, bizarre, dissonant, and disturbing. It is like a potent Scotch, like Laphroig, most will hate it, but those that like it, love it with a passion. On their first US release Kore Ga Mayaku Da, the magnum opus is "I Did Are," a monumental track stretching to over 13 minutes in length, that alternates between various musical styles, while making you wonder where will they go next. The Saints are one of the original punk bands from down under. On their latest release Nothing Is Straight in My House they prove that they still have it. Fronted by original singer Chris Bailey and ex-Church guitarist Marti Wilson-Piper, The Saints rock like it is 1977. Definitely the best track is the title track "Nothing Is Straight in My House." It reminds me vaguely of The Kinks but more raw. The song is built on a simple riff that they augment with brief but bluesy guitar licks, an addictive chorus, and original punk attitude. Here's some new funk straight out of Chicago's Mahjongg. If you are a fan of The Talking Heads world beat sound and the polyrhythmic musical stylings of Kraftwerk, then Mahjongg will probably appeal to you. "The rRABBITT" starts out with a funky Latin based groove, before an avalanche of Kraftwerk influenced percussive beats dominates the music. The band adds layer upon layer of beats and sounds creating a high density funk bomb that explodes in spontaneous joy. Click here to listen.

Song of the Day - January 19, 2006

Queen Adreena rocks on The Butcher and the Butterfly and they mean business. This is one dark, heavy record and I love it! Queen Adreena is lead by Katie Jane Garside on vocals and Crispin Gray on guitar, both of whom were formerly with Daisy Chainsaw. Katie Jan Garside's vocals are an explosive mix of various influences including Siouxsie Sioux, Bjork, and Kurt Cobain. Their music can be disturbing; it is not meant for casual listening. Queen Adreena forges music of aggression, action, and anger. Check out "Medicine Jar" with its pounding bass and buzz saw guitars which combine to create a menacing overtone, that only increase in intensity as the song goes on. As soon as I heard this song, there was no doubt that it was song of the day material. Click here to listen.

Husky Rescue is the brainchild of Marko Nyberg of Finland and you can practically feel the chill of arctic breezes as you listen to the album Country Falls. Husky Rescue has been labeled folktronica, which is an apt description of the sonic landscapes created through a combination of electronic and acoustic sounds. "Rainbow Flows" begins with a spoken introduction and hushed synthesizers only to be joined by guitar and some very low key mellow vocals as it slowly builds to its conclusion. This is authentic chill-out music directly from Scandinavia. Click here to listen.

The World of Steven R. Smith

If you never heard of Steven R. Smith, you are in for an aural experience. Steven R. Smith has been releasing records since the mid 90's as solo works and under various guises such as Mirza, Thuja, and Hala Strana. Steven R. Smith is a member of the Jewelled Antler Collective that includes bands like The Skygreen Leopards and The Blithe Sons, whose members often appear in each others projects. Steven R. Smith specializes in generally acoustic ambient music with wisps of psychedelic influences. I especially like his work on his solo album Autumn is the End a brilliant record. Mirza is a collaboration with Glenn Donaldson, which he continued with the band Thuja. Thuja's music could be described as ambient improvisation; I suppose one could call it ambient jazz. In addition Steven R. Smith has worked on the Hala Strana project which uses Central and Eastern European folk melodies as a basis for his compositions, an ambient Bartok for the 21st century. The Dead Science have released another masterpiece with Frost Giant. If you have to label their music, they would probably fall into the art rock genre. They have a sound that combines various influences, one of the strongest being The Cure; however, one can hear hints of Bauhaus, Jeff Buckley, David Bowie, and even Led Zeppelin. On the track "Blood Tuning," I distinctly get the Led Zeppelin Houses of the Holy vibe from the falsetto vocals to the spaced out free jam trilogy of guitars, bass, and drums. Click here to listen.

Song of the Day - January 16, 2005

The track "The One I Love Is Gone" by the Lowlights is one of the most lonesome songs I have ever heard. It is a mixture of alternative country with psychedelic tinges. Graham Parsons, many moons ago, referred to this style of music as "Cosmic American Music" and the moniker could not be more accurate for the Lowlights. The song has banjo, fiddle, guitar, harmonica, and keyboards which coalesce to create a drifting, limpid, atmospheric aural soundscape that is just perfect for contemplative cold nights. Song of the Day - January 13, 2006

Super Deluxe burst onto the scene like a supernova emanating from Seattle back in 1995 with their critically acclaimed album Famous. Now, approximately ten years later Super Deluxe are back with a brilliant piece of pop music on their third full length album Surrender!. In many ways Super Deluxe served as a critical link in the musical evolution from a grunge to a post grunge world. If you listen to the title track on Famous you will hear the Nirvana influence, but you will also see that they are tending to a more pop-like sound. That pop-like influence is now fully mature on Surrender! My favorite track "Come On" combines late Beatle influences with a dash of Smashing Pumpkins. There is a zero gravity feel to the track filled with lush echoed choruses and the stratification of multiple guitars. Click here to listen.

I was so happy to see the latest Espers' release The Weed Tree appear on Rhapsody, as I believe their debut album was fantastic for fans of their acid folk influenced music. They have a faintly medieval sound that reminds one of Pentangle and The Fairport Convention. Their latest album consists primarily of covers with one original tune. Do not let that turn you off, for I have never been happier with an album full of covers. The covers range from Nico, Blue Oyster Cult to a traditional folk song. I am especially enamored with their cover of the Durutti Column's "Tomorrow." Meg Baird's vocals truly shine and combine wonderfully with Greg Weeks. Click here to listen.

Song of the Day - January 11, 2006

The Robot Ate Me are an unusual treat. Their music is a study in understatement. It is done elegantly and perfectly resulting in some spectacular music that may not appeal to everyone, though I never worry about appealing to the masses. On their latest effort Carousel Waltz, Ryland Bouchard's cracked softly song vocals meld with the beautiful arrangements of clarinet, trumpet, violin, cello, and even accordion to create simply beautiful musical vignettes. The track "Where Love Goes" exemplifies this with a haunting trumpet refrain combined with an angelic chorus. If you listen closely you can hear the echoes of The Beatles in their work. Song of the Day - January 10, 2006

The Divorce's sophomore effort The Gifted Program has recently appeared on Rhapsody. They have a more polished, fuller sound on this album, but that is not to be held against them. Part of the fuller sound can be contributed to them expanding the band from a three piece to a quartet with the addition of another guitarist. One listen to the track "Deny! Deny! Deny!" and you will hear the difference from their debut album There Will Be Blood Tonight. This local Seattle favorite is sure to expand its appeal with this release. Click here to listen.

If you haven't heard of The Greenhornes, you surely will shortly. The Greenhornes backed up Jack White and Loretta Lynn on the Van Lear Rose album, opened for the White Stripes, and will join forces with Jack White to form a new band called The Raconteurs, which should have an album out sometime this year. The Greenhornes combine the neo-garage band sounds of today with the likes of legendary bands such as The Yardbirds and The Kinks. The track "Shadow of Grief" shows their early 60's influences with bluesy harmonica, organ, and just plain fun music. Click here to listen.

Here's another band that slipped under my radar this past year, and to make matters worse they are a Chicago band. I apologize and I must now commit hari-kari as it is the only honorable thing to do. Seriously, their self-titled debut album Sybris is an epic collection of tunes that should not be missed. Angela Mullenhour's vocals stand out putting a hard rocking feminine edge to their sound. There sound is a combination of Edie Brickell, Smashing Pumpkins, Pixies, and My Bloody Valentine. It is hard to pick a favorite track, but if forced I would say "The Best Day in History in Ever." Song of the Day - January 5, 2006

Ok, how did I miss this album last year? The Invisible Eyes are another great Seattle band, which seems to never run out of talent. They have a sound that is a mixture of garage and rock-a-billy straight out of the 60's. The vocals are distant and poorly miked, which contribute to their sound and appeal. They use keyboards to their advantage adding that twinge of 60's psychedelia that I love. The whole effect from the fuzzed out guitars, psychedelic keyboards, and distant snarling vocals is my cup of tea. Laugh In The Dark is a fantastic album. Outstanding tracks include "Don't Wanna Go," "Luanne," "Long Way," and "Little Loretta." If you are only going to listen to a single track, check out "Revelation." Click here to listen.

Song of the Day - January 4, 2006

Sabrosa Purr is a band with a split personality. At times, they can be very heavy sounding with screaming, pounding music. They also can produce a calmer, sophisticated style of music reminiscent of The Smashing Pumpkins. It is this side of their personality I prefer the most. The track "Sabrosa Purr, pt. 1" best exemplifies that style with its laidback feel, slightly muffled vocals, and interweaving musical elements. Click here to listen.

The Dresden Dolls are one on my favorite bands. Their blend of cabaret, punk, and pure theater is a truly unique experience. They recently released some live tracks recorded at the Paradise in Boston as part of their DVD. The track "Christopher Lydon" is about the public radio personality host of Open Source. This particular track shows off the great vocal range of Amanda Palmer, giving a glimpse to the uninitiated the depths of talent that reside within The Dresden Dolls. Click here to listen.

Song of the Day - January 2, 2006

Welcome to the new year. As many of you know, I am a fan of psychedelic music both neo and retro. I love the Seattle band The Purrs. They are often compared to Echo and the Bunnyman and The Verve. However, when I first heard the track "Because I Want To," I immediately thought of the Rolling Stones circa the early 60's. It starts out softly with an acoustic guitar, then reverb laden vocals and electric guitar. Eventually the drums kick in and the intensity level rises, but the best part is the chorus of "dododododododo." Click here to listen.
