Song of the Day - January 24, 2006

I often speak of music that is an acquired taste, well, Afrirampo may even challenge those that have developed their musical palate. Do not pass up the opportunity to listen to Afrirampo because they are one of the most unique musical experiences available today. Afrirampo, which means "naked rock" consists of two sisters from Osaka; Oni is on guitar and Pikachu plays drum. To the uninitiated Afrirampo can be explained as a Japanese hybrid of the musical pairing of Captain Beefheart and The Stooges. Their music is raw, bizarre, dissonant, and disturbing. It is like a potent Scotch, like Laphroig, most will hate it, but those that like it, love it with a passion. On their first US release Kore Ga Mayaku Da, the magnum opus is "I Did Are," a monumental track stretching to over 13 minutes in length, that alternates between various musical styles, while making you wonder where will they go next. Well that was a fun little journey. I'm moving on through the rest of the album because the vocals are forcefully silly.

Keep on mining these strange gems, Mister Bond!
